April Update: Last Blog of the School Year! (sad face)
April Community Service Hours: 2
Spring Semester Community Service Hours: 18
It's the beginning of the end (of our pharmacology program) and I am SO SADDDD!!! This program has been amazing in providing the space for me to grow as a student and young professional... I almost wish I could stay with y'all forever!! But before I go on a tangent about how much I've learned from and enjoyed this program (I'll save it for the survey), let's get to the nitty gritty of this blog post.
For my community service for the month of April, I participated in the Earth Day-inspired event "Keep Louisiana Beautiful" in the area of Algiers in the Morris Jeff Park. This park was formerly called Behrman Park, but was renamed in 2021 after Dr. Morris F.X. Jeff, a recreation department director and athletic director at Xavier University (I graduated from there!) in the 20th century that brought recreation to Black and disadvantaged youth in the New Orleans. For our community event, we went around the park picking up trash, and I must say that I was surprised by how much trash there was just laying around! Plastics, glass, an ENTIRE DOOR, etc. It really is a beautiful park and it's everyone's responsibility to keep things clean so I was happy to be able to take part in this cleanup initiative.
During our last month of school, the biggest accomplishment is that we took the NBME! It was a challenging, but rewarding experience to take this exam because we got a preview of what's to come in our future educational careers. The exam was challenging in that we really had to know and understand each drug's mechanism to do well, but that's also a benefit because one day we will be prescribing these medications, so we have to know all of these things. We are now finishing up our last classes and it's incredibly bitter-sweet because this program has been the BEST! The support and guidance we receive is unmatched, and I hope to stay in contact with everyone. We really have developed a family, and it makes me sad thinking about us parting ways because its truly been a GREAT SCHOOL YEAR!!!!!
